why leave?

Why do Filipinos go abroad for employment?

The main reason is obvious. Pinoys seek employment in other countries because of inadequate or absence of opportunities for development here at home. Overseas Filipinos, OFWs, expats, immigrants, Bagong Bayanis or Global Pinoys, by whatever name they may be called, leave the country for better opportunities and incomes elsewhere.

Given the general backwardness of domestic economy and traditional politics, our culture as a people clearly reflects the real and widespread poverty that seem to have permeated every thinking person's consciousness. However, for the majority, the said conditions have become so mundane, common and even trivial. A resigned or desperate feeling pushes Pinoys to look for employment overseas. They ask themselves "why stay?" The lack of alternatives, even at the expense of leaving home and loved ones, fail to convince migrants to stay in the country. Government itself has made permanent its policy of exporting Filipinos as cheap labor abroad because it cannot provide decent jobs for them here. This labor export policy makes Filipinos vulnerable to many abuses that government also cannot favorably address.

How can we find and apply solutions to these problems? Sharing of ideas would give us a good start.
